  • Who should get Emmy nominations?
    By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

It's not easy being Emmy voters. Their pick-the-nominee ballots arrive this week and their options are staggering — particularly in the best-drama category. You could easily name a dozen shows that are deserving, but only five shows can make the cut. So, as someone who actually watches TV, as opposed to reading DVD boxes and for-your-consideration ads, I offer this handy sample ballot. Emmy voters are free, indeed encouraged, to copy.

    Lead actress, drama
    Edie Falco (The Sopranos)
    Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
    Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters)
    Ellen Pompeo (Grey's Anatomy)
    Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica)

There's as much strength among the women in drama as there is among the men. There just isn't as much depth. That doesn't mean, though, that you can't fill a five-person list with people to spare. Start with Field, whose triumphant TV return in Brothers pushes the show to another level, and Falco, who has made Carmela ever more knowing and compelling. Then add in Pompeo, who may finally get the credit she deserves for tying Grey's plot threads together, and Sedgwick, who represents the victory of star power over less-than-stellar material.

    "Wishin' and Hopin' " -- Feb. 1
Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has the chance to talk to her mother (Kate Burton), who temporarily snaps out of her Alzheimer's and becomes lucid before drifting back into her perpetual fog. It's a stark, wrenching exchange about choices and priorities -- the most haunting moment of the series.
