ELLEN POMPEO for GREY'S ANATOMY
"Wishin' and Hopin'" (air date 2/1/07)
The chief's announcement of his retirement sparks competition between Derek, Burke, Addison, and Mark. A surgical patient endangers the lives of those surrounding her. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) continues to deal with her mother's condition. Cristina and Callie consider marriage proposals. The Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic opens and Izzie cannot wait for the first patient to arrive.

- "Getting dressed up is fun but getting to see people that we don’t ordinarily get to see is special," said Ellen Pompeo as she chatted with the other Gucci-clad guests. While Pompeo and her fellow celebrities dressed up, two models dressed way down, posing in the nude so that students from the Academy of Art could sketch their female forms.
"I’m a big fan of Julian Schnabel, of his film and his art," said Monet Mazur as she surveyed the scene upon her arrival. "I think I’m seated next to him, so we’ll have some interesting conversations." Indeed, Mazur joined the artist at the head table, where Ellen Pompeo, Jenna Rowlands and Mickey Rourke also found their place cards.
"I sort of have a long history with Gucci," said Ellen Pompeo, who evoked all the glamor of old Hollywood—though her vintage-inspired dress is from Gucci's fall 2007 line—at the annual Tribeca Ball to benefit the New York Academy of Art. "I remember being a very little girl and just dreaming of being able to wear it someday." Since the luxury label sponsored the affair, many of the other ladies in attendance fulfilled their own dreams of mixing high fashion with high art.

- Thursday night at the Gucci-sponsored Tribeca Ball.
The event, which benefits the New York Academy of Art, offered the opportunity to create a masterwork of one's own: easels and nude models awaited in one room of Skylight Studios. Not everyone thought the next "David" was at hand, however. "Christopher thinks he should have had input for selecting the models," Ellen Pompeo said, teasing her fiance. "I'm just kidding," protested Chris Ivery.

- "I dressed Jennifer Hudson, Ellen Pompeo and Eva Mendes all in the same night," he said, referring to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's lavish Costume Institute Gala held Monday. "How is that for a diversity of body types?

- Relationships are also the core of Grey's Anatomy. What do you think about the relationships in the show, especially Derek and Meredith's?
Patrick Demspey: Well, they grow very slowly. I think the frustration for Ellen [Pompeo] and me is that we're victims of our own success, in a sense. The chasing in the first season made it so involving, but once we consummated it and then broke up, it's like, how do these characters continue to grow and thrive in a relationship? And I think that's going to be the real challenge going into the next season: Where do they go? What are the other story lines? Or is it an end? There was something about the longing in the chasing that people really got into.
