'Anatomy' lesson: Examine an amorous cast

Doctor who? Bright and idealistic, Grey, the series' narrator, has to deal with more than medical complications: potential romance with a senior surgeon; two roommate-colleagues; and her surgeon-mother's Alzheimer's.

Meredith "doesn't have all the answers," Pompeo says. "She wants to do the right thing, but she's not always going to do the right thing."

Actor's vital signs: The Boston native, 35, has been in several smaller films. Big-screen releases have been critically acclaimed (Moonlight Mile), hugely popular (Old School) or both (Catch Me If You Can).

Major upside of an instant hit: "The stories are touching people," she says. "So many people have come up to me and said they have loved ones suffering with Alzheimer's."

Minor downside: On surgery days, "There are pig parts used for bowels, heart muscles, skin, things like that. Compared to how much we actually shoot, to see what makes it to the screen: 'I had to be nauseous for nine hours, and they didn't use it?' But that's OK."
